Science Fact or Cinematic Fiction

Science, or physics, is not even close to my favorite subject, but taking this class gives me hope that even I can understand physics by watching animations or movie films. One of my favorite hobbies is to go watch movies at the theater. Watching it in the theater instead at home gives it a different vibe to the film. The genre I usually like to watch is, comedy, mystery and action, I just love saying, “Wow that was amazing!” after each mystery or action film. Technology has risen in the last decade and what film creators can do with computer graphic is amazing, it is count-less “wows” from people flying from earth to the universe, creating a wonder world no one has ever been to and many more. The most popular film this year, Alice and Wonderland was count-less “wow” in my part with the computer graphics. Tim Burton and his crew made such an amazing set and characters with the computer graphics that audiences didn't even know they we’re looking at one.

I get in to the movie story so much that during action scene such as Fast and the Furious I don’t even realize that physics is involved or better yet directors and creators make the movie so realistic that I believe that it can even happen in real life. Although in Marvel movies I realize that most of the action is fiction and can’t happen in real life, such as Spiderman, crossing over buildings with spider webs, and Iron man and his Iron suite being able to fly in a very fast speed, Hulk being able to lift his 2,000 pound weight just by pushing off from earth ground not giving it an earthquake. In Looney Tunes physics go straight out the door, we have mouse’s and birds running up to a blink of an eye, cats and coyote’s falling from a cliff and walking perfectly normal after that. “As long as you don't look down, you don’t fall” are Looney Tunes laws of physics.

To begin, I chose three films I though it can relate to jumps, and falls that are bending the laws of physics. “Bleach Memories of Nobody”, Looney Tunes, “Speedy Gonzales vs. Sylvester”, and “Detective Conan Tengoku e No Countdown (Countdown to Heaven.)” In “Bleach Memories of Nobody”, Ichigo Kurosaki, (the main character) after he accidentally obtains the power of a Soul Reaper—a Japanese death personification similar to the Grim Reaper, finds “Blanks” in the city he lives in. Not knowing what they are he tries to perform a “soul burial” but fails. The white ghost looking “Blanks” are harmful yet un-wanted. While Ichigo and his partner Rukia tries to figure a way to get rid of the “Blanks” a slight wind blows and they start attacking Ichigo and Rukia, an un-known tornado comes along with an un-known girl who jumps and steps in to the battlefield. Senna the un-known girl jumps nearly three stories high weighing only about 100pounds. In order for her to do this,
According to Dr. Garcia’s Power point, if I put the equation it becomes, Jump magnification = 30 ft/ 1ft, which equals to 30 jump magnification. Senna is about 100 pounds so; multiply 100 x 30 = 3,000 push force. For a girl that small, that is too much of a push force, also she only takes about 2 frames to crouch yet jumps over 30 feet, which is physically impossible because the graph shows that she can only jump 1 1/3. While Senna is up in the air trying to “Bankai” Ichigo tries to stop her, while both teensagers are up in the air, Senna steps on Ichigo’s face and kicks him down to the ground. Ichigo has more mass than, Senna so her pushing off of him wouldn't push Ichigo off to the ground.

Going on to Speedy Gonzales and Sylvester’s adventure, one of my favorite shows back in elementary school. Back than I didn't realize that there are any physics involved and never thought that it was weird that a cat or a coyote can fall from the sky and land with out dying. Now that I watch it at age 22, it’s still entertaining but I have come to realize that there is a lot of physics that has been bent. The episode I chose is Speedy Gonzales vs. Sylvester, Sylvester tends to jump very high without a crouch, and falls either straight down or a miles away. Because Sylvester is a cat and not a bouncing ball this doesn’t make sense. People or object needs to bend or crouch down before they lift them selves up. Even when somebody scares you we don’t jump with out a small crouch. Sylvester jumps straight up and comes straight back down most of the time sometimes he ends up somewhere else. The parabolic arc is not in the right places, and so if he where to jump that high and come back down with an arc; he probably would miss the well.

Now to the last film I chose, which is “Detective Conan Tengoku e No Countdown” a famous Japanese mystery anime that has ran for over 10 years. Watching this anime all my life was thrilling and as a child I have been scared to watch the scenes where it’s pitch back and yet we only see the killers eyes. This is the 5th movie that came out since 1997 at the climax of this movie, the 5 kids are stuck up on the 75th floor, the bottom floors are burning and there are bomb everywhere. The only way to get out of there is to drive the showcase Mustang through the window and fly over 50 meters and land on to the building next door.
In order for them to do this, according to Ai Haibara, the distance between the two buildings is about 50 meters; the building the kids are on the 75th floor and the building next door have 69 floors, leaving about 20 meters in difference of height. They need to fly over 60 meters because they are higher up in the air. While Ai gave out the calculation; t=√2s⁄g; t=time, g=gravity with is calculated 9.80665 m/sec, s=distance of fall at 20m. The time equals out to 2.02, the kids only have 2 seconds to get to the other side in velocity they need at least 108km/h. According to Conan, the room is small enough to go up to 50 to 60km/h but by opening the trunk, it creates an air opening so that when they start the car and speed at the same time as the explosion it becomes the accelerator and pushes the car over to the building next door.
Simply the equation works, although timing it the right time as the explosion, is nearly impossible; better yet they are only 1st graders. Driving a 3,400-pound car, going through a glass window and jumping over 60 meters is nearly impossible.

Than while the car is moving, Ai falls out, Mitsuhiko takes her hand but the glass sculpture is in the way that she would crash in to it and could injure her self very badly. Conan takes Ayumi’s motorcycle helmet and by using his power-enhancing kick shoes he kicks the helmet in mid-air while the car is jumping over 60meters at 108km/h and breaks the glass sculpture. This is impossible as well, if your going 108km/h which is about 67m/h and a child about 60 pounds jumps on the top of the front window and throws the helmet and kicks it hard enough to break a glass sculpture is physically incorrect. This can occur only in film as cinematic fiction.

Many films don’t have a science as a fact because we see it as entertainment and not reality. Creators try to make the physics close to our real life as possible but if everything went according to the ways our world goes, what’s the fun in that? “Bleach Memories of Nobody”, “Sylvester vs. Speedy Gonzales”, and “Detective Conan Tengoku e No Countdown” all are realistic in ways that some can relate to but after all it is a cartoon and physics are suppose to be bent.

Stop-Motion Character Animation

Because I didn't have a tripod in handy, I put my useful text books on a stool and stabilized it so that my camera would sit still. I placed me coffee maker in it's usual spot and started to photograph it. At the beginning I had a hard time trying to make it look like the plug was moving by itself but managed to do so with a wooden skewer and a black thread. The coffee maker was easy to move around, I just moved it inch by inch.
